How to remove a watermark from a PDF – text, logo and scanned watermarks

Updated · PDF Converter

A draft that has been approved still says DRAFT across every page. A template you made years ago carries an old logo. A scan of your own paperwork has a faint grey stamp behind the text. In all these cases you want a clean copy without retyping anything. This guide explains how to remove watermarks from a PDF for free, and which mode to choose for which kind of watermark.

Important: only remove watermarks from documents you own or are authorised to modify. Watermarks often indicate copyright or confidentiality, and removing them to misuse someone else’s work may infringe their rights.

The quick way: Editable mode

  1. Open Remove Watermark and add your PDF.
  2. Keep Removal mode on Editable PDF – keeps text selectable (recommended).
  3. Leave both checkboxes ticked: Detect watermarks automatically and Remove watermarks marked as such.
  4. Press Remove Watermark and download the result. The report tells you what was removed.

Editable mode works on watermarks stored as separate objects in the PDF – text stamped diagonally across the page, logos, transparent overlays, watermark annotations and watermark layers. Only those objects are deleted; everything else is copied unchanged, so the remaining text stays selectable and editable.

How automatic detection decides what to remove

Automatic detection looks for text that repeats on most pages, is rotated, or is transparent – the typical signs of a watermark. Normal headers and footers are kept. In most cases you do not need to type anything.

If the watermark appears only once, or detection misses it, type it into Watermark text to remove (optional) – for example DRAFT or CONFIDENTIAL. Text objects containing that wording are removed as well.

Scanned or flattened PDFs: Deep Clean

When a document was scanned or flattened, the watermark is no longer a separate object – it is part of the page image. Switch Removal mode to Deep Clean – for scans and flattened watermarks. It redraws each page and whitens faint or watermark-coloured marks while keeping dark text, signatures and stamps.

SettingChoicesAdvice
What to cleanFaint and light-coloured marks (any colour), or A specific colourPick a specific colour when the watermark has a clear tint, such as red or blue
StrengthLight, Medium (recommended), StrongStart with Medium; Strong handles darker marks but may lighten grey content
Output resolution150, 200 or 300 dpi300 dpi is sharpest; 150 dpi gives a smaller file

Two things to know about Deep Clean. First, it turns pages into images, so text is no longer selectable – run OCR PDF afterwards to make it searchable again. Second, it also lightens other content in the watermark’s colour, such as pale shading or light grey boxes. Check the downloaded result and run it again at a lower strength if something you need has faded.

Tip: always try Editable mode first. If the watermark is still there afterwards, it is baked into the page, and Deep Clean is the right tool.

What cannot be removed cleanly

Most watermarks can be removed, but there is a limit. In scans, Deep Clean works because the watermark is lighter than the text. A dark watermark printed directly over dark text cannot be separated from it without damaging the text. In that case, the best option is to get an unwatermarked original from the source.

For a single small mark that neither mode catches, you can cover it with a white box in Edit PDF. Note that this only hides it visually.

Adding your own watermark

Need to go the other way? Watermark PDF stamps text such as CONFIDENTIAL or your logo onto pages, with control over size, opacity, angle, position (including tiled across the page) and which pages are marked. Keep in mind that anyone with editing software can remove a watermark, so for real control combine it with a password.

Is it private?

Yes. Both modes run in your browser, so your document is not uploaded.

Frequently asked questions

How do I remove a DRAFT or CONFIDENTIAL watermark from a PDF?

Use Editable mode with automatic detection on, or type the watermark text into the optional field, then press Remove Watermark. If the watermark is part of a scanned image, switch to Deep Clean.

Can I remove a watermark from a scanned PDF?

Yes, with Deep Clean, as long as the watermark is lighter than the text. Afterwards, run OCR PDF if you need searchable text.

Will removing the watermark change the rest of my document?

In Editable mode, no – only the watermark objects are deleted. Deep Clean redraws pages as images and can lighten pale content in the watermark’s colour, so check the result.
