Many tools – including Acrobat, Word’s PDF export and our own Watermark PDF – add watermarks as separate objects on top of or behind the page. Remove Watermark finds those objects and deletes them: watermark annotations, content tagged as a watermark artifact, layers named “Watermark”, and any text objects containing the words you specify.
How to remove a watermark from a PDF
- Add the PDFs you own and need clean copies of.
- Optionally type the watermark’s text, such as DRAFT.
- Remove and download. The report says what was removed.
Good to know
- Only remove watermarks from documents you own or are authorised to modify. Watermarks often indicate copyright or confidentiality.
- A watermark that is part of a scanned image, or that has been flattened into the page artwork, cannot be removed this way – the tool tells you when it finds nothing removable.
- Removing text by content deletes the whole text object containing it, so pick distinctive words.
Frequently asked questions
Can every watermark be removed?
No. Watermarks stored as separate objects can be removed cleanly; watermarks baked into images or scans cannot be separated from the page without damaging it.
Will the rest of my document change?
No. Only the matched watermark objects are deleted; everything else is copied unchanged.
Is this legal?
Removing watermarks from your own documents is fine. Removing them to misuse someone else’s work may infringe their rights.
