How to split a PDF into separate files

Updated · PDF Converter

Splitting a PDF can mean three different things: cutting one document into several files, saving just a few pages as a new file, or throwing away the pages you do not want. PDF Converter has a tool for each. This guide shows which one to use and how.

Split a PDF into several files

  1. Open Split PDF and choose your PDF.
  2. Under How to split, pick a mode (see below) and enter ranges or a page count.
  3. Press Split PDF and download the parts one by one or together as a ZIP.

The four split modes

  • Custom ranges – one output file per range. Type, for example, 1-3, 4-6, 7- to get three files. An open end such as “7-” means page 7 to the last page.
  • Every N pages – equal chunks. Set Pages per file to 10 and a 45-page document becomes four files of 10 pages and one of 5.
  • One file per page – every page becomes its own PDF, named in page order and delivered in a ZIP.
  • Into two halves – divides the document in two in one click, handy for large reports or scanned books.

Splitting never re-compresses anything, so every part keeps the original quality, and scanned pages are split exactly like text pages. Bookmarks are not carried over, because they would point to pages that may not exist in each part. Text and links within the pages are kept.

Save only the pages you need

If you just want pages 4, 9 and 12 of a long report, Extract Pages is quicker than typing ranges:

  1. Open the PDF to see every page as a thumbnail.
  2. Click the pages to include. Shift-click selects a run of pages; there are also buttons for odd, even and all pages.
  3. Press Extract Pages and download the new document.

The selected pages keep their original order. Tick Save each selected page as its own file if you want separate PDFs instead of one. Your original file is never changed.

Remove pages instead

When you want to keep most of the document and drop a few pages – a cover sheet, a duplicate, a blank scanner page – use Delete Pages. Click each page to remove (it is marked in red), then press Delete Pages. Tick Also remove pages that look blank to let the tool detect near-empty pages for you. Faint scans can be mistaken for blank pages, so glance over the thumbnails before you save.

Tip: to rearrange parts after splitting – for example, to send pages 1–3 and 10–12 as one file – split first, then combine the parts you need with Merge PDF.

Are my files uploaded?

No. Split PDF, Extract Pages and Delete Pages all run in your browser, so the document never leaves your device.

Frequently asked questions

How do I split a PDF into single pages?

Open Split PDF and choose “One file per page”. You get a ZIP containing one PDF for each page, named in page order.

How do I split a large PDF into smaller files?

Choose “Every N pages” and enter how many pages each file should have, or use Custom ranges if the parts should have different lengths, such as chapters.

Does splitting a PDF reduce its quality?

No. Pages are copied as they are, without re-compression, so text stays selectable and images are unchanged.
